21 Types of Sewing Thread And When to Use Them

Sewing threads come in different types to suit specific applications, like sewing garments, shoes, and other products. There is even a specific range of jean thread like Coats Dual Duty, which boasts superb wash-down characteristics and outstanding durability and strength for high-quality seams on denim wear.

The best way to know the different types of sewing thread and their applications is to check with a reputable manufacturer like Coats. We apply the latest technologies to make high-quality and innovative products that can add value to our customer’s manufacturing process. Here are some of our products:

1. Coats Brio

Made for sewing machines, Brio is a lubricated polyester thread with pre-stabilized, continuous, high-tenacity filament to withstand high-speed sewing. It’s versatile for heavy materials, too, including welts, soles, moccasins, leather goods, and jeans.

2. Coats Dual Duty

Our premium quality corespun jean thread features a natural cotton cover and a high-tenacity polyester filament core. Thus, it performs well in the most demanding sewing applications.

3. Coats Gral Multicolour

We injection-dyed Gral Multicolour polyester with up to six various colours to create an attractive thread for making eye-catching stitches. With good abrasion resistance, Gral creates strong seams in severe sewing operations.

4. Coats Tre Cerchi Cotton

Made with long-staple mercerised cotton, Tre Cerchi cotton thread produces attractive lustrous seams for general sewing. It provides the natural look of cotton threads, even for making custom embroidery designs.

5. Coats Pyrostar

Designed for military applications, Pyrostar offers permanent flame and heat protection up to 371 degrees Celsius. It’s a 100% long-staple spun meta-aramid thread for flame-retardant embroidery, too.

6. Coats Firefly

Pyrostar is another 100% meta-aramid sewing thread that can withstand high temperatures, making it ideal for protective wear for military and firefighters.

7. Coats Flame Master

This polyester core spun flame-resistant sewing thread features a special finish for outstanding permanent flame protection. We offer this in an extensive range of shades.

8. Coats Epic

Epic is our all-rounder polyester corespun sewing thread for many applications and fabrics, including silks and high-tech performance materials. It’s also a great jean thread that delivers outstanding stitch formation and attractive seams.

9. Coats Nylbond

We use pre-stabilized continuous filament nylon 6.6 for Nylbond, so it cuts clean without ply separation. Plus, it offers excellent abrasion resistance, durability, and strength to prevent flaking, sewn-in colour change, and ply untwisting.

10. Coats Admiral

This 100% cotton thread is carefully treated under tension to increase strength and lustre. It’s for specialised applications requiring biodegradable and natural threads, like food filters, shirts, and post-dyed garments.

11. Coats Aptan

Made for nylon fabrics and garment dye programs, this lubricated pre-stabilized continuous filament nylon 6.6 sewing thread provides a low-friction and soft finish to minimise abrasion and needle heat. It also offers controlled stretch for firm, balanced, tight stitches and good loop formation.

12. Coats Aptan AW

We added a special water-resistant finish to Coats Aptan to prevent the capillary effect. As such, the thread doesn’t take up water and can be useful for outdoor applications and heavy footwear.

13. Coats Aptan for Apparel

Like the original Coats Aptan, this version is ideal for nylon fabrics in wearable garments. Moreover, it’s a great jean thread for stretch denim.

14. Coats Aquamelt

Our 100% water-soluble thread easily dissolves with warm water, making it ideal for temporary stitching for denim, footwear, woven apparel, and knitted garments.

15. Coats Astra

Our top-of-the-line staple-spun 100% polyester sewing thread is an excellent alternative to conventional SSP threads. It offers better sewing performance for higher productivity and reduced machine downtime. We also carry different versions of this thread, including Rugged, RD, and EcoVerde.

16. Coats Atlantis

Atlantis is a new-generation braided liquid crystal polymer with outstanding load-bearing characteristics and flex fatigue resistance. That makes it suitable for demanding military and aerospace applications.

17. Coats Dymax

We made this fit-for-purpose mercerised cotton thread for thread dyeing end-use. Whether mercerised 100% cotton or untreated fabrics, Dymax ensures the best colour results with high lustre and a smooth surface for beautiful seams.

18. Coats EcoCycle

EcoCycle is our water-dissolvable thread that keeps up with the challenges of garment recycling. It dissolves at 95 degrees Celsius on a 30-minute wash cycle, and once it does, garments are easier to pull apart as it simplifies the removal of labels, buttons, and zips for end-of-life recycling.

19. Coats EcoRegen

EcoRegen is a 100% lyocell thread from sustainably sourced wood pulp, making it eco-friendly and fully biodegradable. We offer this in six sizes to suit various applications, like knitwear, T-shirts, athleisure garments, underwear, workwear, and post-dyed garments.

20. Coats Eloflex

Eloflex makes secure, soft-stretch seams on next-to-skin garments and performance sportswear. Its controlled elongation reduces seam extension failure when used on stretch fabrics.

21. Coats Classic

Classic is ideal for hand-sewing leather goods, moccasins, and soles. As a high-tenacity waxed polyester braid thread, it's also practical for difficult, hard, and thick materials used on belts, furniture upholstery, saddles, nautical articles, and suitcases.
